It has also been adapted into many different forms of media. Greek mythology is even taught in our schools through tales like the Homers Illiad and Odyssey..
This web page is designed to help give information about Greek mythology. We will go over two main important parts of Greek mythology the first being the heritage of Zeus and his siblings on the Origin page. On the relationships page we will explore the personality of the twelve Olympians and how they interact with each other.
Origin of the gods
In Greek mythology it begins with the primordial beings. Chaos, an empty space that fills the Universw,Gaia who is the Earth and Tartaros the Underworld. Gaia gives birth to Ouranos the sky alongside other children. With Ouranos, Gaia concieves the twelve Titans: Okeanos, Koios, Krelos, Hyperion, Iapetos, Thea, Rhea, Themis, Mnemosyne, Phoebe, Tethys, and Kronos. The two main titans we will be fousing on is Kronos and Rhea.
Kronos with the help of the other titans, killed Ouranos. A prophecy was given to Kronos stating that one of his own children will kill him and rule as king. Threatened by the prohecy he swallows his children in order Hestia, Hades, Demeter, Poseidon and Hera. Rhea who was displeased with Kronos, gave Kronos a rock and hide baby Zeus away.
Zeus grew up and with the help of Rhea made a plan to give Kronos a drink that would make Kronos throw up. Zeus disguised himself and gave Kronos the drink. Kronos then puked his other kids up and Zeus killed Kronos.
Relationships
As shown in the Origin section, Greek mythology relationships can be complicated. Zeus who killed his own father also married his sister Hera, Zeus also is known to cheat on Hera. Hera who was jealous of Zeus cheating on her, gave birth to Hephastus by herself. Due to only having one parent came out deformed. Hephastus is married to Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty born from the dead body of Uranos and the sea. Aphrodite is known to cheat on Hephastus with the god of war Ares, who is the son of Zeus and Hera.
Zeus also gave his brothers domain over the world. He claimed the skys and heavens for himself, Poseidon claimed the sea, and Hades claimed the underworld. Hades isn't an Olympian, the other gods mentioned here are.
The rest of the Olympians are children of Zeus. Zeus who swallowed the goddess of counsel Metis. This caused him to give birth to the goddess of wisdom Athena from a crack in his head. Zeus then had an affair with a minor goddess Leto, Leto gave birth to twins. Artemis who is goddess of the hunt and the moon and Apollo, god of music, the sun and medicine. Zeus then had an affair with a mortal woman Semele, Semele was accidentally killed by Zeus while pregnant so Zeus stitched the fetus of Dionysus to his thigh to give birth.
Dionysus depending on the story gained godhood either from rescuing Hera from a trapped throne or inventing wine, which he is the god of.
